Understanding Eiffel

How did the Eiffel Tower become the universal emblem of Paris? Although conceived in 1889 as a symbol of progress and invention, many Parisians considered it an eyesore. 120 years after its controversial debut, the tower still delights and dazzles its many visitors. Your guide for this walk will take you beyond the facts, figures, and clichés, to explore the construction and design of the tower in detail.

With the tower as both backdrop and final destination, this walk places Gustave Eiffel’s innovations in historical context. Understanding Paris architecture and design from the 18th and 19th centuries will help you appreciate the boldness of the tower’s modernity. That is why we begin at the historic Place de la Concorde, passing by the Avenue Champs-Elysées and Arc de Triomphe, the Grand and Petit Palais, the sumptuous Pont Alexandre III, and Les Invalides.

We then cross the Seine into the 7th arrondissement, an area little known to tourists, but adored by Parisians. While there, we’ll see an example of controversial design for the 21st century. World-renowned architect Jean Nouvel’s hotly debated Quai Branly museum emerges both literally and metaphorically from the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.

After your walk, you are free to climb or ride up the Eiffel Tower on your own, armed with an in-depth appreciation for one of the great monuments of the modern world.
